We’re going on eight days of Ethan having a runny nose. I go back forth between thinking it’s a cold or allergies. Usually when he has a cold he has other symptoms like a fever, cough and is tired but the only symptoms he has had is a runny nose. So again we’ve missed his normal weekly events. He’s getting a couple of new teeth I suppose that could be the reason for the runny nose.

I read these articles in my parenting magazines about embarassing things kids say and I think that I won’t experience anything embarassing until Ethan is about three. Well for someone who doesn’t say complete sentences Ethan can surely say some embarassing things. I think I’ve mentioned before about him shouting “butt” (for button) when he sees an elevator or any other button that you push. Thankfully he has learned how to say button. Now when you walk by a public restroom, go into a restroom, or he watches someone go into a restroom, he shouts, “Pee Pee.” Lastly, the other day he pointed to my chest and said “ball.” Actually he said it twice, pointing to each one.

George was supposed to work a double shift this past weekend so I took Ethan over to visit his grandparents. We went over the river (the Kissimmee) and through the woods (past many farms, trees and cows) to my in-laws house. Ethan had a great time and slept the best he ever has in his portacrib. He played in the lake and chased the cats. Each morning he woke up saying “at” which is how he says cat. He learned to say grandpa (“pa pa”) and learned how to say Uncle Will and Aunt Shanna (“weeew” and “ahana”). Today he was talking about the cats and his relatives and his trip this past weekend.

Ethan is quite picky with his food choices (which he totally gets from his father who does not eat any vegetables). Ethan would be quite happy to live off of milk and crackers. I prefer for him to eat a more balanced diet-thus the food battles. For quite some time he has been refusing to even eat things he used to eat all the time-chicken, peanut butter and jelly, mac & cheese, etc. I won’t make him a special meal-he’s been given the choice to eat what is served or to get down. Well there have been a number of dinners as of late that he has gone to bed without dinner. Today he would not eat his lunch (PB&J who doesn’t like that?) so then I offered it to him again after his nap and he refused it again. So we went to run errands and he was starving and whining of course. He had to wait until dinner time where he was served what we were eating. I was so suprised to see him eat everything that was on his plate, mac& cheese, even pork. So I guess the key is to get him starving and he’ll eat anything you want even all his veggies. So now the question is how do I get his father to eat veggies?

It seems like Ethan has been constantly whining for weeks now but the past couple of days have been improved. It started during our vacation and continued through and after his illness. I tried to resign from my job as Ethan’s mother but I didn’t know who to give the resignation to and who would they find to fill my place? So instead I left him in George’s capable hands and hid in the only place I couldn’t hear the whining-my closet (which is spacious enough for me to lay down in). The only drawback is that it made me see how disorganized it is.

Ethan seems to be on the mend. He has been symptom free for the past couple of days. He has been eating-which he is grateful for. He continues to be quite whiny though. Hopefully he’ll stop that soon or I may jump off a cliff. Except there are no cliffs in Florida-what will I do?
