Monday we went to the dr. to check on how Ethan was doing since getting sick while we were out of town.  After an hour of waiting in a small room with two active boys, I decided to leave.  I was sure that if we stayed one more minute they would kill each other.  So we rescheduled for yesterday.  We weren’t there long, thankfully, and were told Ethan has a sinus infection.  He also had an allergic reaction to something they used in VBS so we got some medication for that.

We decided to be wild and crazy and I kept an appointment we had at the chiropractor so we went there as well.  My back is actually doing a lot better so I figured I better stick with what works.  Before we went in I encouraged both boys to use the restroom.  Ethan did but Ian would not.  Me: “Ian you should use the bathroom, remember you had a lot to drink.”  Ian: “I don’t need to go.”  Me: “If we’re in the room and the dr. is working on me I won’t be able to take you right away when you have to go.”  Ian:  “I don’t need to go.”

So we all saw the chiropractor and then I had my electrical stim. time where I’m stuck to a machine.  Ian says “I have to go potty!”  I told him it would be a few more minutes until my thing was done, please hold it.  Two minutes later, “Mommy I’m peeing!”  Sure enough he was, but not just a little, so much so that it was running down his legs and onto his shoes.  I couldn’t believe it.  So I carried him out of the dr.’s office so everyone couldn’t see but ended up getting soaked myself.  Ahhh!  Ian: “I’m sorry mommy.”

Ethan and George got back last night from their day of fun. I was a little apprehensive letting him go out with George because he is recovering from a sinus infection. At 2am this morning, Ian did his usual wake up call for me and shortly after I put him back to bed, Ethan came into our room with an asthma attack. So the four of us were up early this morning-fun family time:) Ian of course, wanted to be up too, especially because he hadn’t seen them all day. So I had to console him and convince him to go back to sleep. We were up with Ethan for a long time doing nebulizer treatments, hot water with honey, hot shower, etc. He was wide awake from his medicine so it took him a while to go back to bed. So it looks like his body probably wasn’t ready for such a fast paced day and his asthma was triggered. But he did have a great time and pictures of he and George on Splash Mountain to prove it.

I had to take Ethan to the allergist today. He’s had a lingering cough since he had croup a month ago and the cough has worsened since our cold snap here the past couple of days. I had to give him a breathing treatment of Albuterral yesterday. His behavior was out of control all day, I even had to restrain him one time. So the doctor said that the croup and the cold weather have triggered his asthma. Thankfully there are no signs of a sinus infection. She put him on Prednesone and gave me an alternative medicine to Albuterral that will hopefully have less behavioral side effects. Also, since Ethan has been complaining about itching watery eyes and itching nose, she put him on Zyrtec for allergies. We discussed the possibility of him maybe being allergic to the Christmas tree. I’m planning on getting him tested again for allergies early next year.

Ethan continues to get up in the middle of the night, 1am or so. Sometimes it appears to be from a night terror, other times after a dream. I guess we’ll just have to get used to it. He continues to progress slowly with the potty thing. A few times I have wondered if he was still too immature for it (especially after he pees every 20minutes which makes for no success in keeping dry) and then he’ll suprise me by telling me he has to go (which rarely happens) or he’ll stay drier than usual. Today I took him to my allergist. After having an ear infection followed by a sinus infection over the holidays, I was tired of the constant sickness and scheduled an appointment with my allergist. She diagnosed him with asthma and allergies (along with the eczema I already knew he had) and will test him for specific allergies in two weeks. She gave him a nasal spray to add to his list of meds. This about it for him. I started volunteering with the senior high youth at church, should be a good experience. That’s it for now.

Well after five days with a fever and the breathing treatments having no effect, we went to the doctor and found out he had an ear infection. Believe it or not this is his first one. It’s also his first round of antibiotics. The doctor called him an antibiotic virgin. Hopefully he’ll be better in time for Thanksgiving when we have both of our families in town.

We went to the doctor’s this morning. Ethan was up all last night coughing, his cough sounds like he is going to throw up. Anyway, I guess he caught something else and has an upper respiratory infection. So he’s back on the nebulizer with Albuterol and Pulmicort. We don’t like Albuterol but he’s handling better than he has before. Now he’s just hyper.

Ethan stopped the croup cough about ten days ago. His nose has been running ever since. This morning he woke up with a horrible cough. Not quite croupy but horrible none the less. I’m not sure if maybe the croup may have triggered asthma again or what. It’s so frustrating that he is sick every other week.

The breathing treatments seemed to work right away and Ethan is doing a lot better. I wish I had known that I would have given him the medication without going to the doctor but I’m always hesitant to give medication without asking first. Oh well. He’s doing the breathing treatments well and knows he gets to watch tv while he receives the treatments which is a big treat. Of course that means he asks to do his medicine all throughout the day.

It’s croup. We went to the doctor’s today and were told that Ethan has croup. When he coughs it sounds like barking. So he’s on the breathing treatments again as well as steam showers. Last night he woke up every hour and cried and coughed and then fell back to sleep. Hopefully the Pulmicort will work quickly.

Since Ethan has been without a fever, we have seen the side effects of the medication on his behavior. When he had a fever I guess the medication didn’t effect his behavior much. I feel awful when I have had it and I can only imagine how he feels. It’s like being intoxicated on coffee. He becomes quite agitated, fussy, and when he doesn’t know what to do about it all, he hits himself in the head or bangs his head on something. It has also made him clumsy. He tripped and slammed his head into a furniture leg today. He has a huge bruise on his forehead. It is quite difficult to deal with so I will be glad when we can stop using it and just use the Pulmicort.
